Kaya Tiwi Girls retain Coast basketball title

Kaya Tiwi Secondary from Kwale County became the only team to retain their title on Saturday as the curtain came down on Coast Region Secondary Schools Term One Games at Mazeras High School.

National and East Africa girls’ basketball champions Kaya Tiwi retained the regional title, easily edging Mwakitawa Secondary from Taita Taveta County 145-18 in the final.

Kaya Tiwi led 31-4 in the first quarter for a 69-10 half time advantage. Kaya Tiwi maintained their dominance in the third quarter, leading 41-3 before taking the last quarter 35-10.

Beryl Aoko was Kaya Tiwi’s top scorer with 22 points, followed by Caroline Njeri who scored 18. Josephine Adhiambo and Scovy Mboya top-scored for Mwakitawa with 10 and five points respectively.

Kaya Tiwi coach, Philip Onyango, said his girls would head straight to camp after the games to prepare for the national games to be held in Nairobi from April 10. “We are confident of winning the national trophy after putting up a good showing here,” he said.

Boys’ basketball champions, Aga Khan Academy from Mombasa surrendered their title to rivals, St George’s from Kilifi County who won the final match 67-59 after leading 25-22 at half time.

Issa Mohamed (16 points) and Ahmed Mwinyi (14) top-scored for St George in the final match, while Victor Maisori (21) and Alisher Abdumamadov (14) were Aga Khan Academy’s top scorers.

Shimo la Tewa from Mombasa are the new boys hockey champions when they beat hosts Mazeras High 1-0, Stephen Katama scoring Shimo la Tewa’s winner in the 34th minute.

Earlier on, Shimo la Tewa had eliminated Last year’s winners St Charles Lwanga from Mombasa, beating them 2-1 on post-match penalty flicks in the semi-finals.   

Bura Girls of Taita Taveta County became the new champions of girls’ hockey after last year’s regional champions St John’s Girls High from Kilifi County 2-1 in a thrilling final match.

Valentine Nyambu and Leila Fadhili scored for Bura, while Sharon Zawadi replied for St John’s. Bura Girls coach, Robert Sewe, said they will continue with their training programme so as to do well in the national championships.

“We know there are many good teams in other areas but we’ll go to Nairobi to make an impact and not just to participate for the sake of it,” said Sewe.
