Newcomers Kaya Tiwi from Coastal Region stunned Obambo Mixed to win the girls’ netball title as the National Secondary Schools Term Two A Games came to an end on Saturday at the Kangaru School, Embu County.

Kaya Tiwi beat Obambo 26-24 in a closely contested final to emerge winners on their debut at the national games. The Coastal side led 17-15 at halftime and went on to complete the historic result after an impressive display in the second half.

In handball, Kimilili Boys and Moi Girls Kamusinga retained their crowns after dominant displays in the finals. Kimilili saw off Metropolitan Region champions Makongeni High 23-12 while Kamusinga beat Sega 25-12 in the girls’ final.

Obambo were bidding to win their fourth successive title but were undone by a young and skillful Kaya Tiwi side that dug deep to make history.

“It feels wonderful to win the title on our debut at the nationals. Our school has invested heavily in sports and the results are clearly bearing fruits,” Kaya Tiwi coach Philip Onyango told Sunday Nation Sport on Saturday.

Onyango also led the school to win its first national basketball title in April during the finals held in Friends School Kamusinga, Bungoma County.

FINISHED THIRD

Mau Region’s Cheptil High finished third after beating Mukuyu Girls from Nzoia Region 36-31 in the play-offs.

The Nzoia duo of Kimilili Boys and Kamusinga Girls underlined their dominance in handball after successfully defending their handball crowns.

For Kimilili, it is a record eighth crown and fourth in a row. Despite a scare in the first half from Makongeni, Kimilili turned on the heat in the second half to cruise to victory. Forward Kevin Imo notched nine goals while Isaac Kololi added five to help Kimilili retain their title.

Makongeni’s Kennedy Simiyu scored three goals but it was not enough to help his side to claim victory. The two schools had played out to a 20-20 draw in the preliminary round.

Kamusinga proved to be too strong for Sega Girls as they lifted their fifth national title. Last year’s Most Valuable Player Jacinta Leli was Sega’s tormenter-in- chief as she scored a game high 12 goals during the match.

“Our focus in now to win back the East Africa crown on home soil. Our key to success lies in our team unity and hard-work,” Leli said.

St Peter’s Chesirikwa and Matuu Memorial won the boys’ and girls’ playoffs respectively. The top three finishers qualify for the East African Games to be held in Eldoret in August.
