Kenyan teams in final title push on last day of championships

Kenyan schools will be looking to strike gold as the curtains come down on the Brookside East Africa Secondary School Games on Sunday.

National girls football champions Wiyeta Girls will be looking to win the girls title when they take on home side ECOTEC at the University of Rwanda’s Huye Campus grounds.

Wiyeta beat ES Mutunda 3-0 in the semi-final to reach their first final since 2007 and a win will see them  lift their fifth regional title. The Kenyan queens beat ECOTEC 3-0 in the first match and will be looking to complete the double over their Rwandese counterparts.

“It will be a different ball game tomorrow (Sunday) because both teams will be going for the title. My team has worked hard, we faced a lot of challenges but we have made it to the final. The title is beckoning,” Wiyeta coach Edgar Manyara said.

The boys’ final will also see new winners after champions St Mary’s Kitende of Uganda lost 0-1 to Alliance in the semis. The latter will take on Masaka of Uganda in the final.

In basketball, Kenya’s Shimba Hills and Upper Hill will contest the girls’ and boys’ final when they face St Mary’s Kitende and Makongo of Tanzania respectively.

Shimba Hills beat compatriots St Brigids 55-44 in their semi-final, with Lilian Adera and Lilian Mboga starring for the defending champions with 16 and 11 points respectively. “We came here with one mission and that is to defend our title, we are one match away from that and the team are ready to continue with their dominance,” Shimba Hills coach Stanslaus Baraza said.

Shimba take on St Mary’s Kitende, 68-66 winners over Rwanda’s LDK in the final in a repeat of the decider in the last four editions which Shimba has won. Upper Hill will take on Tanzania’s Makongo after beating home side Eteni 68-57 in the last four while Makongo ran out 74-55 winners over ETG Nyakabiga of Burundi.

National volleyball champions Malava Boys beat defending champions St Mary’s Kitende  3-1 (26-24, 15-20. 16-25,25-17) to exact revenge after the latter beat them in last year’s final. The 2013 champions will take on home side Rusumo who beat compatriots St Joseph’s 3-1.

In girls’ volleyball, holders Kwanthanze will be up against last year’s finalists GS Indagaburezi of Rwanda in the final. Kwanthanze beat national champions AIC Kosirai 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 27-25) while the Rwandan side beat Kenya’s Lugulu Girls 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19).

In handball, St Peters Nakuru of Kenya will take on Rwanda’s E’S Kigoma in the final.
