East Africa and National boys’ handball champions St Luke’s Kimilili Boys and national rugby sevens champions Laiser Hill were the biggest casualties of the Regional Secondary Schools Term Two A Games that ended over the weekend in various venues across the country.

Winners in handball, netball, under-16 football will represent their various regions at next month’s National Term Two A Games in Mombasa alongside the top two schools in sevens rugby.

Eight-time national champions Kimilili were disqualified at the Western Region Games for fielding an over-age player as Laiser Hill failed to shine in the Rift Valley Region Games.

If their appeal does not go in their favour, then new champions will be crowned in boys’ handball at the National Term Two A Games set for June 5 to 10. Kimilili were due to face Mukumu Boys in the Western final, before a complaint by Kolanya Boys saw the two-time East African champions disqualified from the games by organisers.

“The matter will be heard and determined before the national games so as to ensure we get the teams ready for Mombasa,” Western Region secondary Sports Association Secretary General Robert Mukhwana said.

Kolanya had lost 25- 20 to Kimilili in the semis. Mukumu went on to beat Kolanya 27-18 in the final to lift the regional title and seal their spot in the nationals. National girls’ handball champions Moi Girls Kamusinga will defend their title in Mombasa after they beat Mukumu Girls 23-15.

Laiser Hill on the other hand failed to get past their group at the Rift Valley Region Games held at the Hill School, Eldoret. Menengai beat Simotwo 27-0 to win the region’s rugby seven title.

National Under-16 boys’ and girl’s champions St Anthony’s Kitale and Wiyeta Girls’ also booked their tickets to the Coast after reigning supreme in the Rift Valley Region Games. St Anthony’s beat West Pokot’s Ortum 1-0, as Wiyeta edged Tartar from West Pokot 2-1 in the girls’ final.

The under-16 football competition, which is sponsored by Coca Cola, was introduced to the Term Two games calendar last year. There were also surprises as East African sevens rugby champions St Peter’s Mumias failed to reach the nationals.

The 2015 national champions were knocked out in the semis by new winners Chavakali Boys, who will now fly Western Region’s flag in Mombasa.

In Nyanza Region, Kisumu Day and Nyakach Girls won the football competitions at the expense of last year’s winners Barding High School and Abwao Secondary School.
