Superb Andiwoh claims Rapid Chess honours

Moses Andiwoh upset the favourites to win the second edition of the Super Sunday Rapid Chess tournament held at the YWCA Hostels in Nairobi at the weekend.

Andiwoh collected five out of six points to win the tournament.

The player,  who is among the top 11 set  to play in the final phase Olympiad Qualifiers to be held on the Labour Day weekend, was in imperious form.

Githinji Hinga and Isaack Mukoko tied in second place with 4.5 out of six points.

The first edition’s winner and tournament favourite, Joseph Atwoli, performed dismally finishing with 3.5 points and a distant eighth.

Methu Joseph and Brian Kadenge completed the top five places after coming in fourth and fifth with four points each.

A total of 23 top chess players took part in the hotly contested event that was a 6 round Swiss system with a time control of 25 minutes per player to finish the game.

After the event, there was the Blitz mini-tournament - seven rounds Swiss system, with a time control of five minutes per player to finish the game.

Hinga Githinji, the Chess Kenya Chairman, had an easy time winning this with 6.5 out of seven points. Andiwoh and Atwoli came in second with 5 points each.

Meanwhile, Chess Kenya has announced that international arbiters from Uganda and Tanzania will be used in the East African Open set to get under way this Friday at the Kenyatta University.
