Nzoia Region’s St Anthony’s Boys Kitale and Wiyeta Girls on Saturday emerged the winners of the inaugural Under-16 boys’ and girls’ football titles as the curtains came down on the National Secondary Schools Term Two A Games at the Kangaru School, Embu County.

St Anthony’s beat Aberdare Region’s Wahundura High 1-0 in the boys’ final while Wiyeta saw off Abwao Secondary School from Lake Region 4-0 in the girls’ match.

Laiser Hill from Metropolitan Region claimed the rugby sevens title after a hard-fought 24-20 win over arch-rivals Upper Hill in the Main Cup final.

Marvine Odhiambo’s 48th minute cracker settled the nervy encounter and despite late pressure from Wahundura, St Anthony’s held on for a deserved win.

St Anthony’s coach Peter Mayoyo said his team deserved the title after overcoming all the opposition right from the preliminary stages.

“I am impressed because I have a team that will challenge for top honours for the next four years. Our opponents were well organised and we had a hard time breaking them down, the difference between the two teams was marginal,” Mayoyo said on Saturday.

PIN-POINT CROSS

After a goalless first half, St Anthony’s took the lead through a well worked goal. Captain Philip Mayaka found Odhiambo with a pin-point cross and the latter did well to beat his marker before beating Wahundura keeper Evans Omollo with a low shot.

Wahundura struggled to break down St Anthony’s defence and were restricted to long range shots which did not trouble keeper Sheikh Aleeley.

Wiyeta had no trouble in their match after scoring all their goals in the first half.

Forward Jessica Sironyo bagged a quick-fire hat-trick with Dorcas Bwayo adding the other in the lop-sided encounter. Barding High and Olympic Mixed won the boys’ and girls’ playoffs respectively.

LAISER TOO GOOD FOR UPPER HILL

In sevens rugby, Laiser Hill withered a second half fight back from Upper Hill to win their maiden title.

Laiser Hill captain Daniel Taabu again led the front scoring four tries to aid his side to victory.

“We were brilliant in the first half, managed to close them out and executed the chances we got. We rode our luck in the second half but we are happy with the result,” Taabu said.

Laiser Hill had dumped out last year’s campions St Peter’s Mumias 17-12 in the semis while Upper Hill beat the 2014 Champions Maseno School 19-0.

The Kajiado County School raced to a 24-5 lead at the break thanks to Taabu’s four tries and two conversions from Mike Nyakundi. Saidi Abdalla touched down Upper Hill’s only try of the half.

St Peter’s beat Maseno 19-10 to finish third.
