St Brigids shock Buru Buru in basketball thriller

St Brigids Kiminini upset two-time champions Buru Buru Girls 44-41 on Wednesday in a Pool A girls' basketball match at State House Girls to advance to the semi-finals of the Brookside National Secondary Schools Term One Games.

The Rift Valley Region champions overcame a slow start to shock the highly fancied Buru Buru in the thrilling encounter. The final whistle drew wild celebrations from the St Brigids players after the emphatic win.

"This is a huge win. Buru Buru are a decent side with great forwards and we had to dig deep to claim the win. The result gives us confidence to go all the way in this competition," a delighted St Brigids coach Max Wasike said.

Both teams came into this match buoyed by their opening day wins in their first matches. Buru had thumped Senior Chief Ogle 112-2 while St Brigids overcame Nyanza Region winners Nyamira Girls 81-22.

TIGHT CONTEST

Wednesday's encounter was closely contested with the Rift Valley school leading 4-2 at the end of the first quarter. Buru Buru returned stronger in the second period to outscore their opponents 18-11 to lead 20-15 at halftime.

The last two quarters were tight but St Brigids won 8-6 and 19-15 to claim the famous win. Clara Rotich led the winners with 14 points as Stacey Ongwae sunk 10 points for Buru Buru.

Buru Buru will seal their place in the last four if they beat Nyamira Thursday in their final match. The Nyanza champions whitewashed Senior Chief Ogle 108-4 to stay in contention for the semis.

In Pool A, Tigoi face Loreto Limuru in a must-win match for the former champions on Thursday. A win will see them join pool leaders and champions Kaya Tiwi in the last four.
