Six-star Wiyeta hit Saint Basile, sail into semi-finals

Kenya’s Wiyeta Girls High School on Wednesday eased into the semi-finals of the football competition after a 6-0 drubbing of Saint Basile of Burundi at the Brookside East Africa Secondary School Games here.

It was, however, heartbreak for Kenya’s second team Ibinzo who fell 4-3 on post-match penalties to Alliance of Tanzania in their last eight encounter.

The two sides were locked in a goal less draw at the end of regulation time and they headed straight to spot kicks.

NEW WINNERS

Wiyeta, four time winners of the competition, will battle Alliance in Friday’s semi-final for a place in Saturday’s final.

The other last four tie will be a Ugandan affair pitting Kawempe against Rubaga.

Kawempe secured a 3-0 win over ES Mutunda of Rwanda, as Rubaga beat compatriots Mukono 2-1 in their respective quarter-final matches.

New winners will be crowned after defending champions G.S. Remera from Rwanda failed to make the last eight.

Wiyeta coach Edgar Manyara wants his charges to better the performance in the last four as they bid to reclaim the title they last won in 2008.

“It was a brilliant result from the side. We set out to dominate the midfield and score quick goals and this completely disorganized their plan,” Manyara said.

“Being the only team from Kenya left in the competition, we will be under pressure to ensure we go all the way,” he added.

Forward Christine Awuor starred for the national champions with four goals as the Kenyans ran riot in the lop-sided encounter at Gulu High School.

Kenya Under-20 national women’s team striker, Martha Amunyolete, opened the scoring for Wiyeta in the 15th minute after finishing off a sweeping move.

Three minutes later, it was two as Awuor opened her account before adding two more in the 24th and 26th minutes for a 4-0 lead.

Basile keeper Jeanim Irakole was to pick the ball from the net for a fifth time on 41 minutes after Monica Etot drilled home for a 5-0 lead at the break.

Awuor completed a remarkable outing with the sixth goal in the 56th minute.

Kenya’s Kakamega High School and St Anthony’s Boys, Kitale, will be in action on Thursday in boys’ football quarter-final matches.

UPPER HILL OUT

They had yet to find out their opponents by the time of going to press.

Eleven-time winners St Mary’s Kitende of Uganda will face fellow home side St Mary’s Kisubi in the first boys’ quarter-final match.

National champions Upper Hill failed to reach the last eight after losing three preliminary matches.

In the girls’ handball competition, defending champions Moi Girls High School, Kamusinga, edged out AIP Hanika of Rwanda 21-18 as Uganda’s Kibuli beat South Sudan’s Bor 38-10.
