National Sevens champions Mwamba have been handed easy opponents in the Dala Sevens, the opening leg of the Western Union National Sevens Circuit that gets under way at Kisumu Polytechnic this weekend.
The circuit received a shot in the arm on Wednesday when Western Union, a global payment services company, forked out a Sh10m sponsorship package for the event to the Kenya Rugby Football Union.
Mwamba, who won last season’s Prinsloo Sevens and Driftwood Sevens, will launch their circuit’s title defence against newcomers Kenya Medical Training College, Siaya.
The defending champions, who also reached the semi-finals at the Christie and Kabeberi Sevens, will sample Masinde Muliro University from Kakamega before wrapping up their day one action against Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad.
With some of their key players like international skipper Humphrey Kayange, Horace Otieno, George Mbaye and Lavin Asego missing in action, it remains an enigma how Mwamba will react to the challenge, especially from Blak Blad.
The players are part of the national sevens team squad that has been exempted from taking part in the circuit.
