Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad, who are warming up for Kenya Cup return next season stunned National Sevens Circuit champion Mwamba for the second time 10-5 to reach the Pepsi Kabeberi Sevens main Cup.

For the first time in many seasons, Mwamba, who are yet to win any event this season, will not feature in the main Cup hence blowing up their chances of retaining the NSC title.

Mwamba wobbled in their initial Pool F matches in the fourth leg of the series, snatching slim 17-12 and 17-14 wins against Bungoma and Catholic University respectively.

The defeat came as no surprise for Mwamba, with the absence of their key eight players being felt deep for the second time after they missed the Menengai Oil Prinsloo Sevens where they also lost to Blak Blad 12-14 in the Plate semi-final.

Mwamba fall short

Kulabu’s aggregate after the points tally in the 24-team tournament fell short as they were locked out.

“It happens especially when your top creme is missing. I had to scrap at the bottom and plough out waters boys to play. Our chances of retaining the national title are gone and we should just aim to finish in respectable position,” said Mwamba coach Tito Oduk.

Michael “Tank” Otieno's charges Blak Blad will now face series leaders and Pepsi Kabeberi champions Kenya Harlequin in the main Cup quarterfinal.

Quins were almost flawless, crushing Multi-Media 43-0 and Nondescripts 26-7 before dismantling Impala 12-0 in the final Pool E match.

“So far so good but we are not losing our focus that is clinch the series title,” said Quins team manager Sidney “BLack Rose” Obonyo. “But the Union should think about the 24-team system.”

Fresh from winning the Menengai Oil Prinsloo cup, Kenya Commercial Bank were comprehensive in their display to thrash Mount Kenya 61-0, Comras 47-5 and Western Bulls 36-0 to set up Kisumu in the main Cup quarterfinal.

Nakuru only played one match after their Pool B opponents Kimathi University and Unicef Kakamega failed to turn up.

Nevertheless, Nakuru made mince meat of Daystar, beating them 24-5 to meet Strathmore in the main Cup.
