Champs KCB handed ‘easy’ Kabeberi Sevens pool

What you need to know:

  • Western Bulls, who had a good campaign last year, look likely to take the runners up position ahead of Kisumu, who were relegated from Kenya Cup last season.
  • Kenya Harlequin, the 2012 champions, are in Pool B alongside Kenya Cup holders Nakuru RFC and university sides Daystar and Mean Machine. Quins and Nakuru are favourites but Machine can not be ignored.

National Sevens Circuit champions KCB have been pooled in a relatively easy group as they start their title defence at Kabeberi Sevens this weekend at the Nairobi Railways Club.

According to the draw released Wednesday, KCB face Western Bulls, Kisumu and Catholic Monks in Pool A and will fancy their chances of reaching the knockout stage in the circuit opener.
KCB, who won their maiden title last year, have made changes to their technical bench, parting ways with coach Curtis Olago.

Western Bulls, who had a good campaign last year, look likely to take the runners up position ahead of Kisumu, who were relegated from Kenya Cup last season.

Ironically, Kisumu will face Catholics Monks, the team that replaced them in Kenya Cup.

Kenya Harlequin, the 2012 champions, are in Pool B alongside Kenya Cup holders Nakuru RFC and university sides Daystar and Mean Machine. Quins and Nakuru are favourites but Machine can not be ignored.

Quins, who pushed KCB all the way last year, will be out to reclaim the title. Quins sacked coach Charles Cardovillis but retained Sydney Obonyo in their technical bench.

In Pool C, Mwamba who are the home team, have Strathmore Leos, Nondies and Eldoret to deal with. Kulabu will be hoping to win a first series since 2011.

Strathmore, who won the series in 2009, have been consistent over the years with a top-five finish in the last three years and will be hoping that this is their year. Homeboyz are the defending champions.
