What you need to know:

  • Mwamba, the Plate runners-up at Prinsloo and Kabeberi Sevens, take on the varsity students who have been invited to feature in the division one competition by hosts Mombasa at 11.30am.
  • trathmore Leos finished fourth at Prinsloo after losing to Kenya Harlequins 14-7 in the play-off but they would claim revenge against the same side at the same stage of the Kababeri Sevens to win 24-19.

Former National Sevens champions Mwamba launch their Driftwood Sevens title defence against University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine on Saturday at the Mombasa Sports Club.

Mwamba, the Plate runners-up at Prinsloo and Kabeberi Sevens, take on the varsity students who have been invited to feature in the division one competition by hosts Mombasa at 11.30am.

Mwamba will then renew rivalry with Menengai Oilers at 1.54pm before wrapping up day one action against Strathmore Leos at 4.54pm in a duel that is likely to decide Pool “C” winners.

Strathmore Leos finished fourth at Prinsloo after losing to Kenya Harlequins 14-7 in the play-off but they would claim revenge against the same side at the same stage of the Kababeri Sevens to win 24-19.

Interestingly, Mwamba and Menengai Oilers have met twice in the pool stages at the Prinsloo and Kabeberi Sevens, both matches ending in 7-7 and 12-12 stalemates.

Mwamba has Brad Owako to lead the assault as their new head coach Kevin Wambua continues his rotational policy.

SWEET REVENGE

Wambua has brought in rookies Gabriel Obulo and Jerry Griffins in place of Okiri Moturi and Joe Otieno.

Kevin Atandi and Victor Wayodi make their comeback in place of Dennis Momanyi and injured Matt Wanjia.
Skipper Michael Agevi has been left out after receiving a call up to Kenya Simbas preparing to take on Hong Kong next weekend.

Mwamba are placed fifth in the Series with 24 points, Strathmore are fourth on 32 while Menengai Oilers 15th with six points after reaching Bowl semis at Kabeberi. Menengai Oilers are being handled by former Nakuru head coach Gibson Weru, who won last year’s Series with the Great Rift side.

Impala hope to uphold their great run when they take on Blak Blad from Kenyatta University in day one opening tie at 10am in Pool “A.”

Impala are fresh from winning Kabeberi Sevens last weekend after beating Homeboyz 19-14 in the final. It was a sweet revenge for Impala, who had lost 24-19 to Homeboyz at Prinsloo final.

Impala, who are tied at the top with Homeboyz on 41 points each, will later play Makueni, who won Kababeri Sevens Division Two at 12-24pm and Nakuru at 4.18pm.

Homeboyz are up against a KCB side they have dominated and shut out in two previous cup quarterfinal meetings this season. Kisii and hosts Mombasa complete Pool “B.”

Kenya Harlequin are favourite in Pool “D” where they face Kabeberi plate winners Kabras Sugar, Daystar Falcons and Kisumu RFC, who are the other side invited to the top tier competition by Mombasa.
