Sasha Mutai is the new acting Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman.

The former KRU vice chairman takes over the reins following a Special General Meeting in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Mutai was proposed by Oryx RFC and seconded by Spartans RFC during the SGM that was held at the RFUEA grounds. The meeting, which was attended by 33 delegates from 30 out of the 40 clubs, also sacked the entire KRU board. Fresh elections will be held next month.

The meeting also reinstated Kakamega RFC that had been banned from taking part in rugby activities but put on hold the endorsement of the new 2014 Constitution until the Annual General Meeting in March.

Mutai replaces Gabriel Ouko, who was also in an acting capacity, having replaced Mwangi Muthee, who had resigned in December. Nils Achayo from Spartans was elected on the floor to chair the meeting.

Mutai will be deputised by Thika RFC’s Gerald Chege, who was proposed by Kisii RFC and seconded by Shepherd RFC with Joshua Aroni coming in as treasurer.

Former KRU secretary Jack Okoth returns in the same capacity while former Kenya Sevens coach Benjamin Ayimba was elected in absentia as one of the six directors. Other directors are Ochieng’ Ahaya, Dan Kimaru, Doris Mwanzia, Ken Monari and Patrick Mwangi.

Mutai said they proceeded with the SGM after the court injunction was knocked out by what he called “technicalities”. The Kenya National Sports Council (KNSC) chairman Nderitu Gikaria and treasurer Charles Nyaberi oversaw the process.

A Nairobi advocate, Mark Macharia Ng’aru, said the injunction issued by the Chief Magistrate’s court in Kisumu was “not within its area of jurisdiction”. “The area of jurisdiction of the magustrate’s court are defined and limited,” said Macharia, adding that it’s only an injunction from the High Court that could have stopped the process.

Kisumu RFC member Fredrick Maube had sought the injunction barring Stormers RFC chairman Kennedy Wasonga, Gabriel Ouko and KRU secretary Eddie Omondi from holding the SGM.

“I am deeply humbled by the members. Sanity has prevailed now and real work begins. Rugby has really suffered in the last one year and the first step is to clean up the mess,” said Sasha.
