What you need to know:

  • Kenya Sevens beat Japan 17-12 in their last Pool A match at Sydney Sevens on Saturday.
  • England beat South Africa 21-15 to top the pool.

A last-gasp try by World Sevens Series prolific try scorer Collin Injera saved Kenya Sevens from the jaws of defeat as they beat Japan 17-12 in their last Pool A match at Sydney Sevens on Saturday.

The victory still failed to spur Kenya to the main Cup after they previously surrendered their leads, losing to England and South Africa 19-12 and 14-7 respectively.

The successive losses saw Kenya drop to the Challenge Trophy for the second consecutive time after they beat Australia 19-17 in Challenge Trophy final at Wellington Sevens.

Billy "The Kid" Odhiambo was put through on the right flank from a free-flow to score for a 5-0 lead only for Japan to strike back through Jamie Henry. Katsuyuki's conversion gave the Japanese a 7-5 lead at the break.

Masahiro Nakano would extend their lead to 12-5 with a try but Injera made a break before sending the ball to the hands of Brian Tanga for the touchdown to reduce the deficit at 10-12.

Injera would then extend his lead at the summit of the top try-scorer charts with his 238th try with a breathtaking touch down at the death after some delightful dummies.

Earlier on, sloppy defending saw Kenya squander a 12-0 lead to go down to the Britons in their opening match at dawn.

England beat South Africa 21-15 to top the pool.
