Sevens rugby, judo and shooting squads constitute the first Team Kenya contingent that leaves the country on Sunday for the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games set for July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The teams will leave at 4.40pm without half of their overseas allowances after the Government failed to secure the release of funds in foreign currency in time.

Team Kenya executive officer James Chacha said the three teams will be paid in Glasgow but urged the Government to pay the rest of the team before the remaining athletes leave on Tuesday and Thursday.

The Government had promised to pay half of the athletes’ overseas allowances from today.

“These are the delays we have been warning against. It’s very unfortunate,” Chacha said. “ We wanted all the teams to get at least half of their overseas allowances while in Nairobi so that they take care of their families and personal issues before departure.”

Kenya Sevens team, coached by Paul Treu, has 12 players skippered by Andrew Amonde.

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner to Kenya Christian Turner has tipped Team Kenya to perform well at the games but warned Kenyans to be wary of the Olympic and World 5,000m and 10,000m champion Mo Farah from the UK.

Turner hosted the team to a reception on Friday night at his Muthaiga residence.
