What you need to know:

  • Two tries against the country that is little know for sevens rugby will see Injera become the third highest all time try scorer on the HSBC Sevens World Series.
  • Injera has also played for the Kenya 15s, featuring at the 2011 World Cup Qualifiers. His older brother Humphrey Kayange captained Kenya Sevens until last season when he proceeded for studies at the University of Bristol as Andrew Amonde took charge.
  • In 2010, Injera was awarded the Presidential Order of Golden Warriors (OGW) alongside Kayange for their performance in the 2008/2009 IRB World Series.

History beckons for Kenya Sevens deputy skipper Collins Injera as they take on Sri Lanka on Friday at the Hong Kong Sevens.

Two tries against the country that is little know for sevens rugby will see Injera become the third highest all time try scorer on the HSBC Sevens World Series.

Injera heads into the Seventh leg of the IRB World Sevens Series on 178 tries, just one behind former Blitzbok stalwart Fabian Juries.

Up against former World champions Wales, Sri Lanka and Tokyo Sevens champions Fiji in Pool A, Injera needs a single try to equal Juries's 179 tries and two or more to move third on the standings.

MADE HIS DEBUT

Injera debuted for Kenya at the 2006 Dubai Sevens, announcing himself on the world stage in the intervening years. Among his major accolades with Kenya include claiming the 2008-09 series season's top try scorer's award after landing 42 times earning a Player of the Year nomination.

He has also featured at the 2009 and 2013 RWC Sevens World Cups, playing an integral part in Kenya's semifinal appearances on both occasions.

Only 52 tries separate Injera at top placed Santiago Gomez Cora (230 tries) while Ben Gollings is second with 220 tries, a feat the pacey Kenya Sevens winger can overhaul if he keeps playing for Kenya Sevens over the coming years.

Injera has also played for the Kenya 15s, featuring at the 2011 World Cup Qualifiers. His older brother Humphrey Kayange captained Kenya Sevens until last season when he proceeded for studies at the University of Bristol as Andrew Amonde took charge.

Their younger brother Michael Agevi also plays rugby for the Kenya Sevens. Injera has a degree in mass communication from Kenya College for Communication Technology (KCCT).

In 2010, Injera was awarded the Presidential Order of Golden Warriors (OGW) alongside Kayange for their performance in the 2008/2009 IRB World Series.
