What you need to know:

  • It was a swift revenge victory for Homeboyz.
  • Mwamba beat Nakuru 14-5 to finish third.

A consistent Homeboyz on Sunday halted Kenya Commercial Bank’s (KCB’s) dominance as they rallied from behind to beat the bankers 21-17 to take the Safaricom Driftwood Sevens title.

The absorbing final match held at the Mombasa Sports Club was a repeat of the Dala Sevens decider where Curtis Olago’s KCB prevailed 19-5.

It was a swift revenge victory for Homeboyz, who had also finished third at the Kabeberi Sevens, the opening leg of the National Sevens Series.

KCB beat Kenya Harlequin 24-0 to lift Kabeberi Sevens before their Dala Sevens exploits against Homeboyz.

“Discipline and teamwork did the trick for us,” said Homeboyz coach Simon Odongo. “The drills that we have been working on throughout the weeks have finally paid off and I thank the boys for their resilience.”

KCB coach Curtis Olago said the match was competitive and both teams deserved to win.

“We didn’t expect to lose but it depends on the bounce of the ball as it goes either way. You win some and lose some,” said Olago.

Olago however said they would not surrender the series lead as they head to the Great Rift this weekend to defend the Prinsloo Sevens title.

STAYED TOP

Mwamba beat Nakuru 14-5 to finish third.

KCB stayed at the top with 63 points followed by Homeboyz, who improved their tally to 58 points. Nakuru are third with 42 points, followed by Strathmore and Quins on 41 points each. Strathmore beat Quins 14-10 to take Plate.

KCB were first off the blocks when Jack Ojee completed Ken Moseti and Fabian Olando’s moves with a try that went unconverted.

Oscar Ayodi then tore through KCB’s defence and offload to Alvin Otieno who set up Leonard Mugaisi to score. Michael Wanjala converted to give Homeboyz a 7-5 lead.

Wanjala was then sin-binned for infringement in the rack and Moseti scratched the ball before weaving through for a try that he converted to give KCB a 12-7 at the break.
