Kakamega High School are this year’s Brookside Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association national rugby Sevens champions.

Kakamega stopped Kangaru School’s exemplary run, thrashing them 17-0 in the final to reclaim the title they last won in 2008.

The champions will now make their second trip to the UAE in December for the Emirates Dubai Sevens tournament of the IRB Circuit.

They first played in Dubai in 2008 after winning the national title.

Kakamega had knocked out Alliance High School 5-0 in the semi-finals, with Kangaru shocking former heavyweights Musingu High School 7-0.

“We are very happy to have lifted this trophy, especially after we failed to defend it last year,” said Mike Injera, younger brother of Kenya internationals Collins Injera and Humprey Kayange.

Kakamega, who lifted the trophy without losing any match in the campaign, exhibited great composure on and off the ball, making timely tackles and flashy runs.

Comfortable lead

At only few times did Kangaru threaten Kakamega’s water-tight defence of Injera, Adriano Pondo and Michael Agevi. At halftime, Kakamega led 14-0 after Pondo and Agevi touched down and Agevi converted.

Kevin Alfayo’s try with three minutes to go gave Kakamega a comfortable lead, although Dennis Mukaya should have pulled one try back, had he not decided to kick with charging towards Injera being the better option.

“We have achieved part of what we intended to. For us, just reaching the final was commendable,” said Kangaru’s Benson Mwenda.

Kangaru had produced the first upset of the day with their triumph over St. Mary’s Nairobi, a win that put the Eastern Province representatives in the Cup semis for the first time.
