Bigwigs Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Kenya Harlequin and Homeboyz on Saturday won their two respective opening matches to reach the Safaricom Driftwood Sevens main Cup quarter-finals at the Mombasa Sports Club.

KCB, who are not only the Driftwood champions but also the Safaricom National Sevens Series title holders, flattened Catholic University 24-5.

The bankers, winners of the Kabeberi and Dala Sevens, would then effortlessly crush Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA) 41-0 in their next Pool A encounter on Saturday.

Quins, who are seeking to recapture the Series title they won last in 2012, were clinical in their display, seeing off KCA 48-0 and Catholic University 26-0.

KCB BEAT QUINS

KCB once again outclassed Quins 15-7 to claim the Pool A supremacy battle.

It’s KCB who pipped Quins 24-0 to lift Kabeberi Sevens, the opening leg of the National Sevens Series. Oliver Mang’eni touched down two tries as Stafford Abeka managed one to spur the bankers over Quins.

Eden Agero converted Brian Wandera’s try but it was too little too late for Quins who finished second in the pool.

The bankers started slowly against Catholic University after losing captain Darwin Mukidza to a shoulder injury, with Kenya Sevens skipper Andrew Amonde taking over the armband.

“It’s a serious setback but I hope the rest of the players will go all the way just like they did at Kabeberi and Dala,” said KCB coach Curtis Olago, adding that the matches have been physical, making for an interesting contest, with teams fielding Kenya Sevens players.

Ian Indimuli and Fabian Olando scored two tries each against KCA, with Oliver Mang’eni, Edwin Salamba and Brian Omondi scoring a try apiece. Ken Moseti converted two and Esau Otieno one.

Against Catholic University, Amonde scored a brace of tries while Mang’eni, Philip Wamae, Salamba and Omondi one each.
