Kenya Cup league debutantes Kabras and Catholic Monks face off on Saturday at Kakamega Agricultural Society of Kenya Show ground in what could turn out to be an intriguing tie between two sides that have registered disastrous opening results.

Rugby fans in Kakamega County and its environs are likely to be treated to a nail-biting match from 4pm. The two struggling teams, without a win this season, last met during the promotional play-offs for top flight rugby.

Kabras lost their maiden Kenya Cup match 3-13 to KCB in Nairobi before falling 10-13 to defending champions Nakuru RFC in their second tie staged in Kakamega last week.

Monks have fared no better. They were crushed 112-6 to Top Fry Nakuru in Nairobi before Nondescripts walloped them 56-11.

The sugar miller’s stand-in coach Anthony Ogot yesterday said they had put behind their two losses and were looking ahead to register their first league win and on home turf.

“Most of the players in the team are new to each other and they therefore need time to adjust to the new environment,” Ogot told Daily Nation Sports during the team’s training session in Kakamega.

DISTRACTED ATTENTION

“The defeat in our two games has not in any way distracted our attention in doing well,” he added.

Ogot, who is standing in for head coach Arthur Shikwe declined to reveal his squad for Saturday saying competition for positions was tough and he is yet to decide who will play.

He is likely to deploy hard running flankers Fidel Castro and Polycarp Odhiambo with Cyrus Watum at hooker and Joseph Amalemba at prop.
Meanwhile, Kakamega County will host four KRU Western region league matches on Saturday.

Kakamega will meet Webuye, while Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology takes on Maseno University at Kakamega High School.
