The two weeks the Kenya Sevens team has spent in Australia will play to their advantage during the Gold Coast Sevens, the opening leg of the 2013/2014 IRB World Series this weekend.

The team spent a week training in Brisbane before moving to Gold Coast on Monday ahead of their opening Pool A duel against Tonga on Saturday.

The team will then play United States of America before wrapping up their pool matches against Series defending champions New Zealand.

“We had intensive training in Brisbane but slowed down this week in Gold Coast with concentration on skills. We shall have our last session on Thursday before the captain’s run on Friday,” said team manager Steve Sewe.

“The players have adjusted well; our early arrival was good.”

PERFECT TEMPERATURES

Though hot and humid, Sewe said his team is known to perform well in such conditions, having finished fourth overall last season after losing to South Africa 7-41 in the play-off for third place.

It’s the All Blacks that humbled Kenya in the main cup semi-final 5-15, having edged out Australia 21-14 in the quarters.

“We have no issues with jet lag this time around as the boys have settled down well,” said Sewe. Team skipper Andrew Amonde said they are out to better their last season’ performance by going for nothing short of victory.

“We have set our goals. This is the best team we have at the moment and we are going for victory,” said Amonde.
