The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has mandated the Kenya Sevens technical bench to review players’ contracts based on performance.

The new contracts will take effect next month. KRU chairman Mwangi Muthee said although it is off-season, the review of contracts for the Kenya Sevens squad was in progress and will be completed in the next few days.

Muthee said the Union would abide by all contracts with the players, and last month’s remuneration as well as this month’s will not be affected by the reviewed contract.

TIMELY PAYMENT

Muthee said Kenya Sevens sponsors, Kenya Airways, have been remitting players’ dues without delay.

Muthee urged fans to be patient and allow the team’s head coach Paul Treu and the technical bench to complete the task of identifying the core members of his squad for both the top-tier and second-tier classification for contractual engagement. Muthee said that the union would not allow some players to label themselves "permanent members" in the squad.

“The reviewed contracts will be carefully drawn based on performance. The qualified team to assess performance is the head coach and his management. We have kept data for every player from the just-concluded season,” said Muthee.

Kenya finished seventh in the series last season.

Muthee was reacting to reports that senior players in the Kenya Sevens team had boycotted training after the union and Kenya Sevens opted to review players’ contracts based on performance.

“Surely, why would a player oppose a performance-based contract if he knows very well he will deliver?,” posed Muthee. He noted that stakeholders and fans are aware the playing unit had changed.
