Kenya edge Portugal in London Sevens opener

Oscar Ayodi touched down twice as Kenya Sevens overturned a 5-17 half-time deficit to tame Portugal 22-17 in their opening match of the London Sevens campaign on Saturday.

Kenya found themselves at the back foot when Pedro Leal went for two quick tries before they turned on the screws when Collin Injera pulled one back when he weaved through 40m to score.

The focus is now on Injera, who is two tries away from equalling Argentine Santiago Gomez Cora’s all-time target of 230.

However, Vasco Mendes pulled the Portuguese away 17-5 at the stroke of half-time after latching on a good overhead chip from the right to land at the far corner.

Lovely quick workout at the rucks saw Frank Wanyama lay Ayodi to score before Samuel Oliech converted. Ayodi was at it again to score from and level 17-17 with Oliech missing the conversion.

With few seconds to go, skipper Andrew Amonde burst forward, before putting Wanyama through for the winning try.

Kenya Sevens are due to play Scotland at 2.58pm before wrapping up their Pool “C” encounter against France at 6.04pm. France and Scotland battled to a 14-14 draw in the other match.

Kenya went into the final leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series in seventh place with 95 points, having reached the main Cup quarter-finals in seven out of nine legs. There best show was in Singapore where they won the main Cup for the first time after finishing fourth in South Africa and winning Plate in Australia.
