Leos maul struggling Quins, Bulls blow away Mombasa

Western Bulls and Strathmore Leos bounced back to winning ways on Saturday in Kenya Cup.

The Bulls picked up the pieces from their 6-38 defeat by Kenya Commercial Bank to crush visiting Mombasa 84-0 at the Kakamega Show grounds.

Strathmore Leos condemned Kenya Harlequin to more miseries, handing them a 31-15 defeat at the KCB grounds Ruaraka. Leos were coming from a stunning 15-18 defeat to Homeboyz last weekend. It was Leos first defeat of the season.

Impala also claimed victory against Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad 68-7 at the Catholic University grounds.

The victory saw the Leos bring their tally to 40 points but Nakuru, who went into the weekend at the top of the log with 39 points, were to play Mwamba at the Nakuru Athletic Club. Strathmore went into the weekend in third place.

KCB who were leading Homeboyz 29-5 as we went to press were second in the league with 38 points.

BULLS' DOMINANCE

Coached by Brian Makalama, Western Bulls dominated the better part of the first half. They scored through Brian Tango and Mike Ligono who landed two tries apiece.

Duncan Abuyeka, Elkins Mwinye and Kevin Juma managed one try apiece. Conversions were made by Elvin Asena who struck four times.

The coastal team tried to score through forwards Polycarp Omar, Kevin Kipchumba and Emmanuel Abiko but all the Bulls’ defence was resolute on this afternoon.

After leading 42-0 at half time, Bulls came into the second half snorting fire. The scored further tries via Rodgers Goro, Elvin Asena, Cyrus Kuya, Elkins Mwinye, Davies Chenje, Mike Ligono and Frank Watson.

Brian Watson converted twice and Elvin Asena once.

Makalama was in praise of his boys, who climbed two places to ninth with 17 points. 

“We are on the recovery path. The boys are in top form and ready to win all their remaining matches,” a belligerent Makalama said.
