Nakuru region teams dominate races in athletics competition

Kimilili poor Masosa to triumph in boys’ handball as Kamusinga take girls’ diadem

Maseno School fought hard to reclaim the national sevens rugby title at this year’s secondary schools national Term Two A games, which ended at Kisii High School on Saturday.

Maseno reclaimed the title after beating Laiser Hill 17-12 in a tough final. The two teams seemed evenly matched, but Maseno took the upper hand late in the match with well-executed balls.

In the plate final, crowd favourites St Peter’s Mumias walloped debutants Itierio 12-0.

In the overall rankings, Maseno school emerged the best team of the tournament, followed by Laiser Hill. Kakamega School were ranked third.
Kelvin Maasai of Laiser Hill was named the Most Valuable Player in rugby.

HANDBALL TITLE

Kamusinga Girls scooped the handball title after bringing down Cheptarit 23-18 in the final. Sega Girls beat Matuu 19-11 to finish third.

In the boys’ category, defending champions Kimilili Boys drubbed Masosa 37-22 in an entertaining match to win the title.

Masosa seemed poised to topple Kimilili at half-time but Kimilili broke away to maintain the lead in the second quarter. St Georges finished third after walloping Laboret 19-7.

In netball, Lakeside’s Obambo Girls beat Shimba Hills 27-13 to emerge champions. Cheptarit wound up third after a tight battle with St Cecilia Misikhu that saw Cheptarit win 35-34.

In athletics, Lucy Jepchirchir from Nakuru region won girls’ 10,000 meters race in 36min, 19:6sec. A disappointed Gladys Chepkoech, also from Nakuru, was only two seconds away from victory. She came in second at 36:19:4 as Caroline Kemei from Nzoia region wound up third in 36:34:7

ATHLETICS

Lucy chepchirchir from Nakuru region won the 5000m race in 16:30:8 as Mateiko Valentine from Nzoia Region clocked 16:35:3 for second. Edna jerotich from Nakuru was third in 17:13:4.

The 3000m race was won by Jebiwott Kiprop from Nakuru in 9:30:4. Valentine Matieko (9:38:9) was second and Chemtui Anglina from Nzoia third in 10:17:7.

The best female athletes at this year’s championships were Maximilla Emali of Nakuru region and Margret Nyairera of Aberdares. Both tied on 19 points.

In the boys’ 10,000m race, Alfred Barkach Chelal from Nakuru won in 30:42:7, followed by Josephat Ledama from Lake Region in 30:47:6.

Dominic Nyairo also of Lake Region managed third place at 30:54:0

Alfred Ngeno from Nakuru region won the 5,000 meters contest in under 14:17:8 as Andrew Lorot from Metropolitan region stood at second place with 14:23:6. Third place went to Chumo Rojas of Nzoia region who recorded 14:27:3.

The best boy Athlete was Richard Biwott from Nakuru region with 18 points.
