What you need to know:

  • Injera, who scored five tries at Hong Kong Sevens for his total tally of 183, said it’s now possible to score 48 tries in the coming season and become the time highest try scorer.
  • The South African said his team was moving in the right direction even though it was not showing it in the eyes of the public.

Speedster Collins Injera has said he is not done yet after making history in becoming the all time third highest try scorer in the IRB World Sevens Series.

Injera, who scored five tries at Hong Kong Sevens for his total tally of 183, said it’s now possible to score 48 tries in the coming season and become the time highest try scorer.

The 27-year-old has a chance to inch closer and maybe even overhaul Ben Gollings (220 tries) and Santiago Gomez Cora (230 tries).

“I am still playing and it’s achievable,” Injera said. “ I can only pray that God keeps me healthy without injuries.”

Injera paid tribute to his teammates and coaches who made him reach the milestone. “I could not have reached this far was it not for great teamwork from my colleagues and good guidance from the coaches,” said Injera.

Injera made his debut for Kenya at the 2006 Dubai Sevens, announcing himself on the world stage in the intervening years. Among his major accolades with Kenya include claiming the 2008-09 series season's top try scorer's award after landing 42 times earning a player of the year nomination that year.

AMONDE OUT

Meanwhile, Kenya Sevens skipper Andrew Amonde is out for up to two months owing to an injury.

Amonde, who had just returned from another shoulder injury after missing the Las Vegas and Wellington legs, injured his right arm at the just concluded Hong Kong Sevens.

“It’s unfortunate he won’t do duty in the last two legs in London and Glasgow,” said Kenya Sevens coach Paul Treu.

Also being monitored, Treu said, is Horace Owiti, who has a knee injury. “Otieno will be under a specialist and I hope all will be well,” said Treu.

The South African said his team was moving in the right direction even though it was not showing it in the eyes of the public. “We shall look at club level for players in the off season since we need depth and players who have specialised in certain positions,” said Treu.
