Monks savour first taste of victory

What you need to know:

  • “We have got more games and at this point, I can only pray that the boys stay in shape and focused upon return from the break since it will be tricky after gaining some weight,” said Jawichre.
  • After previous easy wins against minnows, Strathmore’s resilience and attitude would withstand a real tested in their last two matches against Impala and Western Bulls, winning 37-14 and 46-5 respectively.

Newcomers Catholic University Monks claimed an upset 21-0 crushed win against visiting Mombasa on a weekend that saw Strathmore humiliate Western Bulls 46-5 to reclaim Kenya Cup top place.

Two penalties from Brehema Namisi and one by centre Foster Arens put the Monks ahead 9-0 at the break before two tries from wing Harrison Asena and second centre Dominic Mose finished off the coastal lads. But not before Namisi converted one try.

The victory, that was their first this season, saw Monks lift themselves away from the relegation zone but head coach Simon Jawichre warned that they are not out of the woods yet. Monks, who are placed 11th with four points, brace for limping Homeboyz this weekend before the league takes Christmas recess.

“The mood remains positive this being our maiden appearance in Kenya Cup” said Jawichre. “We need to get more points on board so as to avoid relegation since we were never going to win.”  Monks had soaked in defeats from Nakuru, Nondies, Kabras Sugar and Mwamba before pulling one against the Coastal lads.

STAY IN SHAPE

“We have got more games and at this point, I can only pray that the boys stay in shape and focused upon return from the break since it will be tricky after gaining some weight,” said Jawichre. “We shall need another victory to survive.”

After previous easy wins against minnows, Strathmore’s resilience and attitude would withstand a real tested in their last two matches against Impala and Western Bulls, winning 37-14 and 46-5 respectively.

The victory against Western Bulls was perhaps sweet for Mitch Ocholla’s Leos considering that the Western Kenya lads were coming from a great 15-5 win over Kenya Harlequin.

The Leos top with 25 points, one better than champions Nakuru, who got a walkover against Mean Machine and are yet to get a real test since their close 13-10 win over newcomers Kabras.
“The boys have been working hard as they know what we are targeting, said Ocholla.
