Narok shock Kamusinga in hockey, St Peter’s Mumias bag rugby title

  • In girls’ basketball, Shimba Hills beat Parklands Arya 74-40 to win the trophy for keeps. Beryl Akoth and Everlyne Oketch scored 15 and nine points respectively while Melvin Iminza had 12 points for Parklands.
  • Emmanuel Mure’s strike in the 15th minute is all Narok needed to stop Kamusinga who had won all their group matches with a lot of ease. In the play-offs, Maseno School beat Thomas Fish 13-0 to book a ticket to the schools regional games.

Narok High ended Friends School Kamusinga’s reign in boys’ hockey with a surprise 1-0 final victory as this year’s Brookside secondary schools Term One games ended on Saturday at Shimo la Tewa and Shanzu College.

St John’s Kaloleni also gave Mombasa region her first trophy in girls’ hockey with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Kapkoilel from Nakuru region in the final.

At the same time, girls’ basketball champions Shimba Hills beat Parklands Arya Girls 70-47 to retain the title. It was a good day for title holders as Upper Hill also beat Mang’u 67-33 to keep boy’s basketball trophy.

St Peter’s Mumias from Nzoia region also became the new rugby champions after coming from behind to register a shock 15-13 victory over Maseno School in a tough final.

In girls’ hockey, Florence Mwaka from St John’s sounded the boards three times while Veronica Maua and Agnes Rais scored a goal each for a comfortable 5-0 win against Kapkoilel Girls.Sinyolo hammered St Joseph Kibwezi 3-0 to finish third.

In the rugby final, champions Maseno School were leading 13-03 with only four minutes on the clock but a late rally by Mumias saw them turn the tables to win 15-13.

SLOW REACTION

Horus Alela and Blastus Juma made a try each for St Peter’s Mumias while Carlos Magara scored a penalty and made a conversion for the comeback. Maseno had taken the lead through Brian Juma and Albert Obura tries while Juma scored a penalty.

St Peter’s coach Shimenga Livondo said his players capitalised on their heavy presence in the 22 area to score quick points.

“We were shaky in the first-half but we later regrouped to pin Maseno down in their own half,” Livondo said.

Maseno coach Gilbert Onyango laxity and slow reaction on the part of his players for the loss.

“My players lost concentration and reacted too slowly which our opponents took advantage of to punish us,” he said.
