Defending champions Kabras Sugar on Saturday led hosts Kenya Harlequin, Mwamba and Impala Saracens in storming the Cup quarter-finals of the Christie Sevens on day one of the action at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa grounds.

Kabras, who were seeded top for this penultimate leg of the National Sevens Series, impressed with convincing wins in Pool A to underline their intentions of retaining the title. They opened proceedings with a crushing 41-7 victory over Strathmore Leos, before seeing off MKU Thika 39-5 to seal their place in Sunday’s Cup quarters.

Dan Sikuta and Felix Ayange pulled the strings as the sugar millers bossed the students.

The Charles Cardovillis-trained featured Ugandan dangerman Philip Wokorach, who was making a comeback to the side after missing the last two legs.

“We were a bit slow in out first match but we recovered well to claim an impressive win,” said Cardovillis after day one action.

Hosts Quins were also in imperious form as they beat MKU Thika 38-12 in their opening match before cruising to a 19-10 win over Leos in their second outing.

Mwamba, who have had an otherwise disappointing campaign, were inspired by the return of Kenyan international Collins Injera.

They stunned series champions Homeboyz 22-17 in a thrilling Pool C match.

Former Kenya 7s captain Humphrey Kayange gave Kulabu a 5-0 lead before Kenyan international Leonard Mugaisi raced over 40 metres to touch down at the other end to level the scores.

Another try by Mugaisi saw Homeboyz lead 10-5. The Deejays received a blow after Humphrey Mulama was sinbinned.

Speedster Injera’s offload minutes later saw Ronnie Omondi break and touch down for Mwamba to level the scores at 10-all.

Homeboyz skipper Jeff Oluoch converted try saw the Deejays take a 17-10 lead, but Kayange touchED down between the posts to reduce the deficit to 17-15. Ronnie Omondi finally grabbed his brace at the hooter and handed Mwamba victory.

Mwamba then beat Western Bulls 30-7 in their second match to seal their place in the last eight. Sepetuka 7s runners up Impala took control of pool B after wins against Mean Machine (36-5) and Kisii (34-12).
