Motari set for Kenya 7s debut in Singapore

Impala Saracens centre/wing back Samuel Motari is set for his dream debut for Kenya Sevens at the World Rugby Sevens Series Singapore leg of on Saturday.

Head coach Benjamin Ayimba has called up the player to replace injured playmaker Biko Adema for the eighth leg where Kenya are due to renew their continental rivalry with South Africa in Pool “C”. The Pool also has Russia and Scotland.

Adema injured his arm during a training session and missed out on the Hong Kong Sevens. Impala utility back Samuel Oliech was picked to step into his shoes. Kenya’s run at the Hong Kong 7s ended at Plate semis where they lost to England 33-0 to collect 10 points for their Series count of 63.

The move to hand Motari, 23, his debut perhaps is in line with Ayimba’s strategy geared towards grooming more new players as the Olympics beckon.

Motari, who made his Kenya 15s debut last year and featured in a Test Match against Spain, has been knocking on the Kenya 7s door for long, having played for Kenya Morans at the Safari Sevens last year.

“I am definitely ready since I have been working hard as I wait for an opportunity,” said the former Maseno School and Strathmore Leos player.

“I know that competition is tough out there but I will give my best,” he added.
