Superb Strathmore Leos rally to stun Mwamba

Strathmore Leos staged a dramatic comeback, rallying from 8-22 at the break to down Mwamba 23-22 in a thrilling Kenya Cup match at Impala Sports Club on Saturday.

Champions Nakuru  whacked visiting Western Bulls 39-6 for a bonus point victory that saw them dislodge Strathmore from the top the Kenya Cup standings even though both sides have 34 points each.

The Leos scored three tries, two penalties and a conversion for their first victory without a bonus point as the second phase of Kenya Cup got underway. Mwamba scored three tries, two conversions and a penalty to fall short of Leos reach by a point.

The Leos could have gone ahead 3-0 with Kenny Andola’s penalty but Mwamba turned on the screws with an explosive display at the breakdowns and line-outs. Some good open display saw left wing Mark Okwaro finish off with a try that fly half Chris Asego converted.

Unrelenting Mwamba confined Leos to their own half with good display that saw them get a penalty after an infringement by Leos flanker Charles Omondi, who was sin-binned by referee Godwin Karuga.

Mwamba opted for a line-out where they claimed possession before mauling for right wing Hyke Otieno to sneak in the try. They increased their lead with a penalty conversion by Asego before Sikuta intercepted a pass to cross over for a 22-3 half time lead.
