Underdogs Blad Blad in Driftwood 7s quarters

  • Blad opened their campaign against Impala, beating them 14-10 prior to winning their second game against Nakuru 14-7. Then they went on to beat Makueni 17-5 to qualify for Sunday’s quarter-finals.

Blak Blad caused a major upset against Impala and Nakuru in the Driftwood Sevens in their Pool A division one matches at Mombasa Sports Club on Saturday.

Blad opened their campaign against Impala, beating them 14-10 prior to winning their second game against Nakuru 14-7. Then they went on to beat Makueni 17-5 to qualify for Sunday’s quarter-finals.

Blak Blad coach Michael “Tank” Otieno praised his players for putting up a spirited fight to win all their three Pool A matches. 

“We prepared well in advance for our games. I knew we’ll make it to the quarters,” he said.

He said they were now aiming to win their quarter-final clash and secure a semi-final place. “Our target is to win the semi-final and fight to take the cup. It’s going to be tough but we’ll try to make it,” he said.

Another team from Pool A to book a quarter final place is Impala who registered a 46-0 victory over Makueni before edging Nakuru 12-5.  In another Pool A clash, Makueni bowed down 19-7 to Nakuru.

As expected in Pool B, Homeboyz had an easy passage to the last eight after winning all their three matches. They started their assignment by beating Kisii 24-0 and went on to secure another easy 40-0 victory against Mombasa. They beat KCB 14-0.

KCB also sailed to the quarter finals as they beat Kisii and Mombasa 12-0 and 22-5 respectively.

Mwamba and Strathmore Leos were Pool C teams which booked their places to the last eight. Mwamba had an easy passage to the quarters after beating Mean Machine 22-5 and Menengai Oilers 14-0 as Strathmore defeated Menengai Oliers and Machine 21-7 and 17-7.

In Pool D, Kenya Harlequins and Kabras qualified for the last eight. Quins edged Daystar 46-0 and Kisumu 19-5 with Kabras beating Daystar 35-0 and Kisumu 34-0.

In division two, Brumbies made a flying start winning their first three Pool E matches. They started getting a walk-over against Coastal Raiders who failed to turn up, then beat Mombasa II 27-0 before registering a 12-5 win over Nanyuki.
