Western Province humbled Rwanda 24-5 to recapture the schools' title at the Safaricom Sevens rugby tournament on Saturday.

Dan Abonji put Western ahead at intervals 5-0 with a well-worked out try. Elkana Musonye, Bush Mwale and Victor Agala scored a try each for the 2010 champions as Billy Mwale converted twice for the victory.

Donat Kanyamahanga’s try at the dead was too little too late for the Rwandese side which, however, left with heads held high.

“These is our first time to participate in the tournament and we are happy to have reached the final. It shows that the development structures that are in place are slowly working. We will eventually reach there,” said Kanyamahanga.

Western surrendered the title last year to Uganda, who beat them 19-15 in the final. Western coach Shimenga Livondo praised his charges for their good display.

“It’s through hard work, commitment and great skill that we have won today,” said Livondo, whose team had seven players from Kakamega High School and others from St Peter’s Mumias.

Hidden Talent from Dagoretti Corner upheld their dominance over Uticas, handing them a 10-0 defeat to win the girls’ Under-19 final.

Debutants impressed

Skipper Edith Njeri, a Former One student, led her charges to a 0-5 half-time lead with a corner flag try before Maureen Sayo finished off for Hidden talent who had earlier beaten Uticas at the Provincial Championships and national rugby.

“Our motto is to train hard and win easy and that is what was on display today,” said Njeri, who congratulated her colleagues for their discipline and hard work that enabled then to improve after winning Plate last year.

Meanwhile, Impala reclaimed Veterans title, after dethroning champions Nondescript with 17-9.
