Third seed and 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka defeated Slovakian qualifier Jozef Kovalik 6-2, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 to reach the French Open second round on Tuesday.

Wawrinka saved two set points in the second set tiebreaker before going on to down the 152nd-ranked qualifier.

The Swiss player will face Alexandr Dolgopolov for a place in the last 32.
