Employers in Mombasa have been urged to allow mothers flexible working hours to enable them breastfeed their infants exclusively for six months.
County director of health Dr Shem Patta said 13 per cent of infant mortality rates can be prevented if children under the age of five are exclusively breastfed for six months.
The County department of health, Aga Khan Hospital and a Non-Governmental Organisation dealing with health called on stakeholders to encourage their employees to breastfeed.
The women who were drawn from 14 breastfeeding support groups in the county were urged to champion the program in their various communities.
