Former government spokesman Alfred Mutua on Wednesday attacked a former Cabinet minister’s track record as he launched his bid for the Machakos County governor seat.

Dr Mutua, who started his campaigns on Tuesday, addressed several rallies in Mwala District. For two days, Dr Mutua hit out at former Water Minister Mutua Katuku.

“I was the one who talked to President Kibaki and the then head of the civil service to have Mr Katuku appointed to the Cabinet, but his track record as a minister, was embarrassing,” he said at Wamunyu market.

He blamed poor leadership for Ukambani’s under-development, and that it’s time to pick visionary youthful leaders. But Mr Katuku later sent the Nation an SMS dismissing Dr Mutua’s claims.

Mr Katuku, who lost the Mwala parliamentary seat in 2007 said: “Dr Mutua’s assertions are baseless. If he was as powerful as he claims, why didn’t he use his position to influence development in the region?

"He should stop fooling Machakos people and instead embark on issue-oriented campaigns,” Mr Katuku said.

Others in the Machakos governor race are assistant Sports minister Wavinya Ndeti, Mr Titus Ndundu of Kangundo, retired intelligence chief William Kivuvani and former Export Processing Zone chief executive Mutule Kilonzo.
