Dairy farmers contracted by Brookside Dairy are smiling all the way to the bank after the processor paid out over Sh100 million in cash bonuses under a reward scheme.

The farmers numbering over 300 from 25 counties signed up into the bonus scheme in which they were given targets for the supply of raw milk.

On Wednesday, Brookside honoured the farmers, further cementing its excellent relationship with raw milk suppliers across the country.

Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri presided over the award ceremony at Brookside Dairy’s Ruiru processing hub. He was flanked by the firm’s executive chairman, Muhoho Kenyatta.

“The government will support all initiatives that seek to motivate farmers to grow volumes of milk. However, there is a need to address challenges that prevent us from optimising the value of the dairy enterprise such as over-reliance on rain-fed agriculture,” Mr Kiunjuri said.

On his part, Mr Muhoho said, “We want to transform dairy farming into a profitable agricultural enterprise for all farmers, especially smallholders who form the bulk of those supplying us with raw milk.”

Brookside milk procurement and manufacturing director John Gethi asked farmers to sign up to the raw milk bonus scheme as a way of improving their earnings from the dairy enterprise.
