A data price war is brewing in the telecom sector with Telkom Kenya now introducing a new Sh20 data bundle, a month after Airtel’s Unliminet Sh20 hit the market.

Airtel, Telkom Kenya and Safaricom are all dangling data bundle offers that lure new users to stay hooked to their networks. Telkom is the latest entrant with its Sh20 data offering a 200megabyte data bundle, 180 minutes of talk time, 100 on-net text messages and 20 off-net test messages.

“Our offers have enabled us to grow our customer base quarter-on-quarter. With our focus firmly on the customer, there is need to ensure that they have ease of access to Internet-enabled devices and mobile voice and data packages that give them increased value for their money,” said the company Chief Corporate Communications Officer, George Mlaghui.

Telkom Kenya’s data plan is part of a month long campaign that will also see subscribers purchase Internet-enabled mobile devices from as low as Sh3,499.

The telecom firm will give subscribers its Orange Klif devices complete with free 2gigabyte data bundle which lasts 4 months.

Airtel’s Unliminet Sh20 offer on the other hand comes with free Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter. The data bundles also offer 20 megabytes data, 20 text messages and 6 minutes of talk time. Safaricom’s bundles priced the same offer 35 megabytes data and 35 text messages.

UnlimiNet has posed quite a competition to Safaricom, with both firms engaging in a senior officials poaching game to tap into new expertise and defend existing expertise in the recent past.

Communications Authority’s latest statistics state that Safaricom is the leader in data with a market share of 64.1 per cent, Airtel has 17.5 per cent, while Telkom Kenya has a 13.4 per cent data market share.
