MPs split on cess and parking fees

Nakuru MPs have differed over the recent increase in parking and cess that have sparked demonstrations in the town.

Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria and his Bahati counterpart Kimani Ngunjiri oppose the introduction of the new levies.

However, Nakuru Town West legislator Samuel Arama supports Governor Kinuthia Mbugua’s administration decision to review them.

Mr Ngunjiri and Mr Gikaria have sought to meet the governor to review the new policy.

Mr Arama called on Nakuru residents to give Mr Mbugua a free hand to run the county.

Mr Ngunjiri last week joined demonstrating truck drivers opposed to the rise in cess fees along Nakuru-Bahati highway.

The tonnage cess rates were increased from Sh200 per day to a maximum of Sh1,600 per trip.

In a public notice issued by county secretary Joseph Motari, owners of small vehicles like saloon, station wagons and pick-ups operating in Nakuru town, will now part with Sh100 up from Sh80.

Those in Naivasha will pay Sh80 up from Sh50 while for Molo and other towns, charges have increased from Sh30 to Sh50.

Lorries and bus operators who have been paying Sh160 will be required to part with Sh300 for space within Nakuru town while for Naivasha and Molo towns, the rates will be Sh200 and Sh150 respectively.

Parking small lorries in Nakuru town will now cost one Sh200, Naivasha Sh150 while Molo and other towns Sh100.

Monthly charges for lorries and buses in Nakuru town have gone up by Sh1,500.
