A 20-year-old college student has drowned in a dam in Bomet County. Nahashon Yegon, a student at Kijabe Technical Institute, is suspected to have jumped into a dam on Sunday morning in Sasita village, Chepalungu Sub-county.

The victim’s relatives and villagers said he had been unwell and depressed before the incident.

“Yegon, who has been on medication took his usual doze of drugs before he went out. His siblings thought he had gone to answer to a call of nature,” said a relative who declined to be named.

When he failed to return several hours later, a search was mounted, which led to his body being found floating in a nearby dam.

The man’s relatives said the student had developed suicidal tendencies in the past few weeks. Divers from Bomet County government retrieved the body from the dam on Sunday afternoon.

“The body was taken to Kapkatet Sub-county Hospital mortuary,” said Chepalungu Sub-county Police Commander Nelson Masai.

Three weeks earlier, the body of an 11-year-old girl was recovered from Nyangores River.
