Police in Runyenjes, Embu County are holding a student after he attacked a school staff and a fellow student with a machete at Macumo Secondary School.

The Form Three student went berserk after he was given a suspension letter over indiscipline. He went to the school's store and took the weapon making teachers and students to flee for their safety.

The assailant then headed to the school principal’s office where he attacked a lab technician,  Mr Anthony Njuki, injuring him on the hand.

One of the students who rushed to rescue Mr Njuki was also injured.

Following the attack, learning at the school came to a standstill as Education and county officials held a crisis meeting to quell tension.

County director of Education Margaret Mwirigi said the student was recently sent home to bring one of his parents or guardian over indiscipline.

“After the case was over, the boy appeared angry. He went to the store and took a panga. Luckily enough, it was not so sharp,” Ms Mwirigi said.

Embu Knut executive secretary Josphat Kathumi condemned the attack and called on the Teachers Service Commission to enhance the security of the teachers.

He said teachers were constantly living in fear of being beaten up by students since there were no disciplining mechanisms.

“We want to be protected the same way the government is protecting students. TSC should be firm in advocating the rights of the teachers the same way it does for students,” said Mr Kathumi.

He also called on parents to discipline their children and not to take sides when they are reprimanded for unruly behaviour in schools.
