  • The children's grandmother was woken up by screams at 3am and the family worked to put out the fire.

Three children were killed in an early morning fire on Sunday in Gacagori Village, Runyenjes Township.

The three pupils aged 14, 10 and seven years old were trapped inside the three-bedroom house in Embu County.

HOSPITAL

Area assistant chief Washington Ireri said the children were found near the iron door, suggesting that they were unable to open it due to the heat.

Ms Mercy Karimi, the children’s aunt, said the three were pronounced dead on arrival at the Runyenjes Level Four Hospital.

Their grandmother said she was woken up by screams coming from the house at around 3am.

She said they switched off the electricity supply to the house but by time they put out the fire, the three children had lost consciousness.

They were rushed to hospital.

Mr Ireri urged residents to be quick in responding to distress calls from neighbours to save lives.
