Two plead guilty to drug trafficking charges, fined Sh60,000

Two men have been fined Sh60,000 each by for peddling drugs. The two, on Tuesday, admitted before an Embu court that they had been growing bhang at Makuria village in Embu County.

Robert Rukwaro and Stanley Maina, who looked composed as the ruling against them was being read, will be jailed for 18 months should they fail to pay the fine. Embu Principal Magistrate Samuel Mutai observed that the duo pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully cultivating cannabis sativa.

“They have admitted the offence and so they are guilty as charged," ruled Mr Mutai.

FINED HEAVILY

The magistrate said that the men should be fined heavily to discourage them from repeating the offence.

The accused were, however, escorted to prison as they could not immediately raise the fines.

Earlier, the court heard that their area chief alerted the police to help uproot bhang from the accused persons’ farm.

RUNNING BATTLES

As the crop was being destroyed, scores of youth, including the accused persons who were armed with machetes and stones, engaged the police in running battles which left two officers injured.

One youth, who was shot on the leg, was taken to hospital in critical condition while the injured officers were treated and discharged.
