The voter registration exercise kicked off in Garissa County amid claims of delayed delivery of materials in some areas and border towns.

Speaking to the Nation.co.ke on Monday at the start of the exercise, County Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Coordinator Saad Nur said there had been no hitch reported.

He said the voter registration kits were delivered to their respective stations on Sunday evening even though sources claimed some of the BVRs were yet to be delivered to some areas like Hulugho by Monday morning.

“So far we have not heard any problem in the entire county, we delivered the kits to their destinations by Sunday evening. We know there are security challenges but we expect the exercise to continue smoothly,” he said at the Kenya National Library where the exercise was being held also.

He said the electoral body is targeting to register about 33,000 new voters.

However local politicians have faulted the IEBC for not doing much awareness in the county arguing that voters in remote areas are not aware of the exercise.

But the IEBC officer said they have used local radio stations and even leaders to ensure the voter listing exercise awareness is spread further.
