Two construction workers were on Tuesday evening killed in an attack by unknown assailants in Fafi, Garissa County, as they went about their duties.

The two, whose identity is yet to be established by police, were killed at around 6 pm.

According to locals, they were working at the site in Harbole Jara Jara division when the incident happened.

It is not yet clear what the motive for the attack was, but police said they would issue a comprehensive update early Wednesday morning.

North Eastern regional commissioner Mohammed Bariq told the Nation that authorities were pursuing the attackers.

"We have sent our officers to the ground. They are yet to get full information on the attack and there is a communication problem," he said.

He said investigations have also been launched to confirm whether Al-Shabaab insurgents are behind the killings.

The attack comes just days after intelligence reports revealed the presence of the terror group's militants in Garissa.

The report asked local residents to be vigilant during this festive season.

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai last week recalled all officers who were on leave in a move aimed at preventing any attacks over the holiday season.

In October, at least 10 General Service Unit (GSU) officers were killed in the county after their vehicle hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Degoh Road.

The officers, from Harhar GSU Camp, were on patrol along the Kenya-Somalia border when their Toyota Land Cruiser hit an IED believed to have been planted by Shabaab militants.
