Three Catholic sisters were rushed to hospital on New Year's eve after they were involved in a road accident near Rodi Kopany town in Homa Bay.

The incident occurred when the nuns from Divine Mercy church and orphanage were going for an overnight mass at Rodi Parish on Homa Bay–Rongo road.

Witnesses said the vehicle in which the nuns were travelling in was involved in a head on collusion with a car belonging to Homa Bay nominated MCA Salome Awino.

The MCA who was with three other passengers in her car escaped unhurt.

“We heard a loud bang some few minutes after 8pm. When we got to the scene we found the accident victims in a lot of pain and we rushed them to to St Lawrence's Hospital," said a witness.

Kalanya Konyango area chief Fredrick Onyango said the sisters' vehicle lost control before it crashed into the MCA’s car.

“The three sisters sustained injuries on various body parts while their driver had leg fractures and head injuries,”  he said.

Homa Bay County police commander Marius Tum said they have launched investigations into the matter.

He said the MCA and the other occupants of the vehicle will be  interrogated over the accident.

The officer urged locals and road users to remain cautious.

“Be vigilant on the road. Don’t be in a hurry to get somewhere. All road users must protect human life," said Mr Tum.
