Student in coma after alleged assault by APs in Homa Bay

The family of a KCSE candidate at St Peter’s Rambusi Secondary School in Homa Bay County is seeking justice after their son was allegedly assaulted by police officers in Ndhiwa last week.
The 17-year-old student is admitted to the county referral hospital after he was allegedly assaulted while on his way to register for Huduma Namba on Thursday.
It is said that Almada Onyango was attacked by police officers at Kamata trading centre within Kakaeta Sub-Location.
Witnesses allege that Onyango was attacked by two Administration Police officers attached to Kamata police post.
LEFT UNCONSCIOUS
One witness said the assault left the young man unconscious.
"The officers were hitting him with sticks. They hit different parts of his body,” a resident said.
Onyango was rushed to Ogongo Heath Centre then transferred to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital where he is said to be in a comma.
His mother, Leah Ogweno, claimed that the officers who attacked her son stripped him naked and started beating him.
She said he was attacked when he tried to ask the officers why they were assaulting another minor they had arrested earlier while riding a motorcycle.
THREATENED
Ms Ogweno told journalists that the officers threatened to shoot her when she made enquiries about the assault of her son.
“My daughter was the one who informed me that her brother was being attacked by a group of police officers at the police post. My attempts to intervene were futile as I was threatened with a gun,” she claimed.
Locals who witnessed the ordeal had to intervene and rescue the boy.
Ms Ogweno is now appealing for help from government agencies and wants action taken against the officers who are said to have assaulted her son.
Ndhiwa Sub-County Police Commander Evans Ombui confirmed the incident.
He said the officers accused of the assault have recorded statements at Homa Bay police Station.
Mr Ombui added that they are considering taking administrative action against the officers.
