A three-month-old baby boy narrowly escaped death after being dumped in a pit latrine in Homa Bay County.

Residents of Kachieng' village, Kakelo Dudi sub-location in Rachuonyo East sub-county, were shocked to find the boy in the latrine pit.

The incident occurred in a rental house in the village.

The boy was found by a man who had gone to take bath in the toilet which also serves as a bathroom.

The infant was wrapped in a mosquito net.

Area assistant Chief Jacktone Ogweno said he had to mobilise residents to rescue the boy.

"The man heard the child cry and he alerted fellow tenants," said Mr Ogweno.

The residents had to demolish part of the toilet to access the child.

"We found the boy breathing even though the latrine was about three-quarters full," added the Chief.

"Nobody is ready to claim ownership of the baby and nobody has complained about a missing child. We don't understand how somebody could dump him here," said Jacob Odongo, a resident.

Mr Ogweno said his efforts to identify parents of the baby had proven futile. The minor was taken to Ober Health Centre for medical care as investigations continue.

"I have sent reports to various health facilities to get records of women who gave birth recently to enable us identify the mother in case the boy was born in one of the facilities," added the administrator.
