Police in Isiolo have arrested a primary school teacher accused of impregnating a Class Seven girl from a neighbouring school in Oldonyiro, Isiolo County.

The teacher was arrested on Thursday after local leaders led by County Parents Association chairman Ismael Galma raised concern why legal action had not been taken against the teacher despite the girl reporting the matter at Oldonyiro Police Station a week ago.

It is alleged that the teacher planned to quietly sort out the matter with the minor’s parents until Thursday when a teacher at the girl’s school broke the news to the County Director of Education and his Teachers Service Commission counterpart during a meeting.

Isiolo County Police Commander Joseph Kigen said the suspect, who is being held at Isiolo Police Station, will be arraigned on Friday.

Local leaders and human rights activists alleged the teacher bribed the local administration and security team who were silent on the matter.

“The suspect has been at large since the girl reported the matter on September. We want action taken, we will not allow teachers continue taking advantage of young girls they are supposed to protect,” said Ms Lucy Mworia, a women rights activist on Thursday.

“I am appealing to parents to report such cases so that legal action is taken against the culprits. Let them not settle the matters locally,” said Mr Galma.
