Police say they have gunned down seven suspected robbers in Isinya, Kajiado County, after trailing them from Nairobi.
Isinya OCPD Kinyua Mugambi says they recovered an AK-47 rifle in the Wednesday evening incident.
The seven were in a Toyota Fielder car that was trailed from the capital city by police officers before they were cornered along the Isinya-Kiserian road.
According to Kajiado county commander Beatrice Gachago, the suspects have been on police radar and are members of a gang that has been terrorising residents in different places including Nairobi.
They are said to have opened fire on police officers when they were asked to stop. The suspects died instantly under a hail of bullets, according to police, with more than 50 bullets hitting the car.
The recovered rifle had three rounds of ammunition. Two police jungle jackets and two police walkie-talkies were also recovered.
The bodies have been moved to the City Mortuary and the gun taken for ballistic inspection in Nairobi.
The bullet-riddled vehicle, suspected to be stolen, was towed to Isinya police station.
